Over the years we saw the rise of the beauty market or simply the “beauty industry”, this sudden rise was magnified by people’s consumption of social media. Beauty gurus on youtube paved the way for this, including beauty pioneer Michelle Phan around 2013. , later on, evolved into beauty influencers from social media apps like Instagram. These trends that influencers and brands like can come and go. Here we take a closer look at the future design trends that will dominate the beauty market in 2021 and forward.

Beauty Market Defined
The beauty market is composed of cosmetics, perfume, and any products for hair and skin while beauty salons or spas are considered under the beauty services.
Importance of social media in the beauty industry
Globally, this industry is strong and there are no signs of slowing down. According to statistics, it is a $483B industry in 2020 to $511B in 2021 — and with an annual compounded growth rate of 4.75% worldwide — it’s predicted to exceed $716B by 2025. And $784.6B by 2027. Research also reveals that women account for the majority of the sales.
And one of the reasons behind this is the expansion of cosmetics marketing through digital channels and the attraction of more customers willing to pay higher prices for higher quality.
Simply as an appreciation of aesthetics, this industry had continuously grown over the years especially among indie brands that focus more on effective simple ingredients and a concrete marketing strategy. Among these beauty brands include Glossier that was established around 2019. What started as a beauty blog eventually evolved into a skincare and beauty brand. Glossier is best known for is its use of social media to build a very strong and instantly recognizable brand.
We can’t ignore the fact that social media marketing remains a valuable asset in this market.

Now let’s get to five design trends that we are currently loving!
First on the list is…
Natural, Clean, Transparent Beauty
A quick google search of beauty brands that fall under this category we can see how their branding is leaning on the minimalistic side. Using rather muted and soft pastels, take a look at Ilia and RMS Cosmetics.

We’re guessing that this minimalistic style will continue to dominate for the rest of the year.
Muted colour palettes
Speaking of muted palettes. Influencer Marketing Hub, predicts that you don’t need vibrant in-your-face colours, but muted tones. A muted colour is any colour that’s saturated with a hint of black, white or any other complementary colours which makes it more appealing to the eyes.
These specific colours give a calming and nostalgic effect. A muted pink colour is one of my favourites!

Psych-Out
The psychedelic aesthetic of the ’70s is coming back! More funky and dreamy typography and illustrations but with the use of earth-toned colours. That is a trend that keeps on popping among our feed not only the beauty industry is in love with it but almost all fashion brands too!

The signature psychedelic style is consistent with dreamy textures and shapes with curvy custom typography.
Austere Romanticism
A twist in minimalism, this design trend is captivating a lot of audiences which is highly influenced by historical aesthetics. These designs offer a Victorian-tinged take on the beauty of nature with a minimal, modern edge.

We couldn’t get enough of this!
Flat Icons and Illustrations
What we are currently working with are flat icons and digital illustrations. A more personalized approach in design, which we believe makes a brand stand out!
- Express an abstract concept
- Add life to a dull subject
- Tell a story
- Inform and educate readers
- Outline steps of a process
